Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

A Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) is a device used to supply breathable air in environments where the surrounding atmosphere is unsafe or lacks oxygen.

What is a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, or SCBA?

A Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) is a device used to supply breathable air in environments where the surrounding atmosphere is unsafe or lacks oxygen. In the maritime industry, it is commonly used by firefighters and emergency responders during onboard incidents involving smoke, gas, or chemical exposure. The T-ISS SCBA provides an independent air source, allowing users to operate safely in such conditions.

Unlike our Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD), which is intended for personal use during emergency escape situations, the SCBA is designed for trained personnel such as firefighters who need to actively operate in hazardous environments for extended periods.

How does a SCBA work?

The T-ISS SCBA uses a six-liter compressed air cylinder made of alloy steel to deliver clean air to the user through a full face mask. The system maintains positive pressure, which helps prevent contaminated air from entering the mask. Airflow is regulated by a pressure reducer and a supply valve, ensuring consistent breathing support.

A built-in alarm whistle sounds when the air pressure drops to 46 Mpa, alerting the user that the supply is running low. The full set includes the air cylinder, face mask, back strap, supply valve, alarm, and pressure reducer, all packed in a practical carrying bag for easy transport and deployment. The unit operates at 300 bar and provides up to 60 minutes of use.

Approvals and Standards

The T-ISS SCBA is approved according to DNV MED Module B & D and carries the Wheelmark, confirming that it meets the requirements of the SOLAS convention. These approvals ensure the SCBA is compliant for use on SOLAS-regulated vessels and meets international maritime safety standards.
