What is an Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD)?

An Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD) is a portable safety apparatus designed to provide a short-term supply of breathable air in emergency situations. Onboard ships, it is a vital piece of life-saving equipment, especially in confined spaces where toxic gases or oxygen deficiency may occur. The EEBD is intended for emergency escape only—not for fire-fighting or entering hazardous areas. Its lightweight and self-contained design make it easy to store, carry, and operate when every second counts.

How does the EEBD work?

The EEBD is a self-contained breathing device. This means it does not need to be connected to an external air source. It includes a pressurized air cylinder with a working pressure of 210 bar and a 3-liter capacity, delivering breathable air for up to 15 minutes. When activated, the EEBD provides a steady flow of air to the user. This allows them to escape from dangerous environments safely. If the air supply is running low, an audible alarm will sound to warn the user. With a total weight of just 6 kg, it is designed to be user-friendly, even in high-stress situations. A training version is also available for onboard drills and crew familiarization.
