What is a Pilot Ladder?
A Pilot Ladder is a specialized rope ladder used in maritime operations to safely transfer pilots between their pilot boats and the vessels they are boarding or disembarking—often while the ship is underway or maneuvering near port.
Unlike embarkation ladders, which are used for general crew transfer or emergency evacuation, pilot ladders are specifically designed for pilot transfer during navigation and are subject to strict international safety standards.
How does a Pilot Ladder Work?
The T-ISS Pilot Ladder is deployed over the ship’s side, providing a vertical and secure climbing structure from the waterline to the vessel’s deck. The ladder is fastened to strong anchor points on the deck and hangs down to the level of the approaching pilot boat. As the pilot boat comes alongside, the maritime pilot climbs the ladder to board the ship.
The lower four steps of the ladder are made of non-slip rubber, which enhances grip and safety during boarding—especially when wet or exposed to splash. The ladder remains stable through proper tension and secure attachment, allowing safe, controlled movement even in rough seas.
Design and Materials
The T-ISS Pilot Ladder features hardwood (beech wood) steps and spreaders, which provide strength, stability, and resistance to deformation, while also offering secure and comfortable footing. The four lower steps are made of rubber, improving grip during boarding operations—particularly in wet or rough conditions.
The ladder is assembled using 4-strand Manila (or synthetic) side ropes. To maintain proper spacing and structural integrity, hardwood step thimbles are used throughout the ladder. The entire construction is securely fastened with aluminum rope clamps, offering resistance to corrosion and wear in saltwater environments.
Each ladder is custom-made to the length required and complies with all relevant standards for pilot boarding arrangements.
Approvals and Standards
The T-ISS Pilot Ladder is fully approved by Istituto Giordano and carries the Wheelmark certification, ensuring compliance with the European Marine Equipment Directive (MED). It also meets key international safety regulations, including:
- IMO Resolution A.1045(27)
- MSC/Circ. 1428
- ISO 799 (2004)
- SOLAS 1974 Convention, as amended – Regulations V/23 and X/3
These certifications confirm that the ladder meets global requirements for pilot transfer safety and is suitable for use on SOLAS-compliant vessels.
