What is an Embarkation Ladder?
An Embarkation Ladder is a specially designed rope ladder used during both emergency procedures and routine operations—particularly when transferring between the ship and another vessel, a pier, or the shore while the ship is anchored or docked.
The T-ISS Embarkation Ladder is built to perform reliably in demanding marine conditions. It extends from the deck down to the waterline and remains stable even when the vessel is subject to trim or list. To comply with international maritime safety regulations, the ladder can be installed at each embarkation station—or shared between two adjacent stations—where survival craft are launched alongside the ship.
Unlike pilot ladders, which are designed for use during navigation to transfer maritime pilots, embarkation ladders are typically used when the vessel is stationary or alongside and are intended for general crew access or evacuation.
How does an Embarkation Ladder Work?
The T-ISS Embarkation Ladder is deployed over the side of the ship and provides a safe, secure way for crew or passengers to climb between the vessel and the sea. It hangs vertically from the deck to the waterline and is manually secured at the embarkation station. The ladder remains stable and functional even when the ship experiences a trim of up to 10° or a list of up to 20°, ensuring reliable performance during drills, transfers, or emergency evacuations.
Design and materials
Our Embarkation ladder is constructed from durable hardwood (beech wood) steps and spreaders, supported by either 4-strand Manila or synthetic rope, depending on your requirements. The step thimbles and rope clamps are made from hardwood and aluminum, ensuring reliable performance and long-term resistance to saltwater exposure.
The ladder can be custom-produced to the length specified in your quotation request, ensuring it meets the specific requirements of your vessel.
Approvals and Standards
