Low Location Lighting Regulations

According to IMO and SOLAS regulations, all passenger vessels carrying more than 36 passengers are required to be equipped with a certified LLL system. These systems are essential for guiding passengers to safety during low visibility situations such as smoke or power failure.

The requirements for Low Location Lighting are defined by several international regulations, including SOLAS Part 1, Regulation II-2/13.3.2.5.1, IMO Resolution A.752(18), the FSS Code Chapter 11, and ISO 15370:2021. Together, these standards outline the design, testing, and application of LLL systems on passenger ships.

Key requirements include:

  • The use of Wheelmark-approved materials.
  • All escape routes, including stairways, must be equipped with LLL.
  • In corridors or staircases wider than 2 meters, LLL must be installed on both sides.
  • Exit signs must be placed at every exit, on the same side as the door handle.
  • Fire and watertight doors must be marked to indicate the direction of opening.
  • LLL systems must undergo luminance testing at least every five years.

These regulations ensure that LLL systems are reliable, effective, and fully compliant, providing safe evacuation routes during emergencies.

Why we work with LightLine products

At T-ISS, we work with Low Location Lighting products from LightLine (by T-ISS). The LightLine LLL system is a simple, cost-effective solution that fully complies with international regulations. Installation requires only the application of photoluminescent tape along the bulkhead and the placement of directional signage where needed. LightLine strips feature a green line at the top and bottom, giving them a high-end visual finish. All LightLine components are DNV-certified for performance and durability.

LightLine LLL Profile System

Our profile system consists of a robust extruded aluminum carrier combined with a rigid photoluminescent strip, offering long-term durability and a clean, professional appearance. The standard version includes a 50 mm wide visible strip, ideal for marking escape routes. All profiles are DNV-certified and designed for quick and secure installation.

In addition to our standard solutions, we also design custom-shaped LLL systems to meet the specific needs of shipowners, shipyards, and marine architects. All LightLine strips are reverse-printed, protecting the photoluminescent layer from damage, and making them easy to clean and maintain.

Tailored Solutions for New Builds and Refits

We work closely with shipowners, shipyards, and design teams to deliver optimal Low Location Lighting solutions for both new constructions and refurbishment projects. Our team can advise on system design, placement, and compliance to ensure the highest safety standards are met.
